it’s cohost launch anniversary week! you might remember that we celebrated our first birthday (as well as eggbug’s birthday) back in february, and might be confused why we have two birthdays. february was our private launch, but june 28, 2022 was our public-facing launch! those of you who joined on launch day have now been here for a year!

to celebrate, we have some Fun Surprises:

new merch

say “holo” to SUPER RARE and ULTRA RARE HOLOGRAPHIC EGGBUGS! it’s the same little guy you love, but a little shinier.

add ‘em to your collection here!

we’re also launching….. drum roll please……

eggbug shorts!

there’s no real explanation for this one other than we thought eggbug booty shorts would be really funny. they are, so now they’re real! (and they have pockets :eggbug-shocked:) if anyone runs a race in these, be sure to send us your finish line picture.

and now, probably the biggest merch announcement so far:

we’re making an official eggbug plush!

that’s right, folks. eggbug is real and our friend (soon). we’re working with makeship to launch an eggbug plush campaign- stay tuned for more information and updates as we get closer to production!

Asks!

today is also the initial release of Asks, which we’ve been working on for a bit! for those who aren’t familiar, this is our implementation of a formspring/curious cat/tumblr/retrospring/etc-style question and answer system. since this is a complicated feature that affects many parts of the website, we’re releasing it a little differently from normal.

as of right now, only staff members are able to receive asks. over the next few days, we’ll be enabling asks for more users. our goal here is to catch any technical issues that arise with as few people impacted as possible. we’ll post updates on rollout progress here.

asks behave similarly to comments; you can write markdown but not HTML. responses, on the other hand, are full fledged posts! anything you can do in a post you can do in an ask response.

once you’ve enabled receiving asks (check your project settings page!) you can also choose to allow anonymous asks, as well as restricting anonymous asks to ONLY users who are logged in. this is required for one of our main features to work consistently: Anonymous Blocks!

if you’re getting anonymous asks you don’t like, you have the option to block that user from sending you more asks. this, obviously, requires us to know who is sending the asks, so it won’t always work if you allow for logged-out anonymous asks. you can also report any asks you receive that violate our community guidelines.

we’re planning to add more to asks over time, but we’re excited to have the base out now!

that’s all for today! thanks for using cohost over the last year. we’re thrilled with where the site’s at and excited for it to keep growing. eggbug forever :eggbug:

happy birthday cohost!!
reading this felt like reading a club penguin update post for me
maybe that’s because im on weed rn
thank yall for making this website, ive met many nice friends and people through here

I'm curious: so cohost does make an attempt to block asks from a given non-signed-in user? it just might not work?

But this all sounds delightful and I'm excited for it to roll out. :)

I would hope in that situation they at least do what Tumblr does - block that specific IP address from sending that specific user asks (or, if it's bad enough, block that IP from the site entirely). Of course, that's easily circumvented by VPNs and proxies, but that's the unsolvable problem for a truly anonymous internet.

I think it says it "might not work" because if you don't only allow anon asks from logged-in users, you can't tell whether the anon ask you just got was from somebody who's logged in or not. And because you can't tell, you have to be able to try and block them regardless, but if they weren't logged in, they can't be blocked

would it be correct to assume that asks cannot be answered privately? i believe this was a feature on tumblr between two logged in users, but don't know about other platforms referenced. i can see how it may skirt close to the DMs policy mentioned Monday tho

Hey, remember in the financial update it said the merch store makes almost nothing?

... Where is the link to the merch store?????? I just went looking for it and have no idea where it is and had to click on the link inside this post.

random suggestion: users that blocked you would have their comments hidden, but not their responses (at least not completely, a clickthrough seems reasonable)
as is, get blocked by someone remotely popular and comments go :crab:
