ok. i realize that i am biased. my biases should be obvious. but every new thing i learn about bluesky (on a technical/product level) makes me wonder why anyone is taking it seriously
- you can't view ANYTHING unless you're logged in, and logging in requires an invite code. embeds don't work, sharing posts in any form other than a screenshot doesn't work, etc. it's like they forget that the reason twitter became the soft-power entity that it was was that it had a bunch of journalists and those journalists could embed tweets in their articles. (twitter also seems to have forgotten this)
- ATProto is inherently incompatible with any notion of "privacy", meaning private accounts are impossible. this is also why block lists are public.
- and, perhaps the most damming of all, you can't post gifs
this is to say nothing of their moderation policies/practices (or the lack thereof), the most rancid parts of twitter culture (and the most rancid twitter users) moving there wholesale, etc. imo it's doomed to, at best, be "twitter before elon but slightly worse and with fewer features." i do not know why any single person on earth would find that desirable. good thing there's other websites.
