ok. i realize that i am biased. my biases should be obvious. but every new thing i learn about bluesky (on a technical/product level) makes me wonder why anyone is taking it seriously

  • you can't view ANYTHING unless you're logged in, and logging in requires an invite code. embeds don't work, sharing posts in any form other than a screenshot doesn't work, etc. it's like they forget that the reason twitter became the soft-power entity that it was was that it had a bunch of journalists and those journalists could embed tweets in their articles. (twitter also seems to have forgotten this)
  • ATProto is inherently incompatible with any notion of "privacy", meaning private accounts are impossible. this is also why block lists are public.
  • and, perhaps the most damming of all, you can't post gifs

this is to say nothing of their moderation policies/practices (or the lack thereof), the most rancid parts of twitter culture (and the most rancid twitter users) moving there wholesale, etc. imo it's doomed to, at best, be "twitter before elon but slightly worse and with fewer features." i do not know why any single person on earth would find that desirable. good thing there's other websites.

in reply to @jkap's post:

i think because this all happened so, relatively, quickly, people needed to just have twitter but it Works again. too used to posting on twitter and i can't blame them

but the web itself is shifting and trying to stick to old mediums is only gonna get you scammed

there's certainly other Better Places To Go, even not counting This Website We Are On Right Now you could be in a lot of other places and be better off. but some people are just so desperate to have Twitter Again that they will just... go to Twitter Again Spearheaded By The Same Guys (Just, Slightly Even Worse)

yea i found out the hard way that you can't post videos and that's literally the only way i can share my art. shit sucks.

most of the people i see moving to it are visual artists, so like . i can see why that doesn't really matter to them. but come on. it's so obviously terrible after looking at it for 10 minutes

there being no nitter-like viewer for bluesky as far as i'm aware (there's psky but it's just for opengraph i guess?!) despite the fact that their federation protocol has no semblance of privacy makes me chalk this fact up to "nobody cares about posts on bluesky enough i guess"

its doing a great job at quarantining the twitter refugees that Liked Twitter and frankly ill take that as a win. I do not want, and i do not think that cohost needs the majority of twitter refugees to come here.

It still amazes me how quickly the perception of Dorsey went from the guy who made a barely-functioning website and explained that the company couldn't stop hate speech because that would disproportionately affect certain political parties to the visionary who brought us all together in harmony, before the vile usurper ruined everything (and maybe this cryptocurrency thing will work out, after all).

And you really hit the nail on the head: What made Twitter "Twitter" was that you had immutable messages that were easy to embed. That makes it a legitimate place for the media to watch, and where the media goes, people who want their name in the media follow, and everybody else follows them. Without those two features, you don't have "serious" social media...which I hastily add is fine, unless your entire purpose is to replace Twitter.
