Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Review

mostly liked it! possibly the most Tasteful marvel movie i’ve ever seen, which i imagine is because its primary purpose is a tribute to chadwick boseman (which it excels at) and not to sell more marvel movies.

TWO MAJOR CAVEATS:
- i continue to hate how (most) modern movies shoot night scenes. much of this film was illegible, even in a Dolby Cinema theater environment, where you would expect it to thrive. this issue feels largely endemic to disney and i hate it
- i think it is an Extremely Questionable idea make the primary villains uhhhhhhhh literal mayans who are (justifiably!!!!!!!) angry about things like the subjugation of their people by spanish colonizers centuries prior, and the continuation of that legacy. the movie makes jokes about colonizers and then does this. coherent politics. not helped by an ending scene making it clear that Yeah They’re Not Redeemed They’ve Still Got Ulterior Motives. not a fan of that bit!

oh also martin freeman is still in it as One Of The Good Ones (a CIA agent who isn’t interested in furthering america’s imperial interests, which makes him kind of a lousy CIA agent tbh). that’s marvel babey

it’s so frustrating!!! and so common!!!! like when i saw nope a few weeks ago, a movie which has SO MUCH AT NIGHT, i spent the whole time like “holy shit this is so legible i can SEE WHATS HAPPENING” which SHOULD NOT BE A HIGH BAR

The mayans theme at least is softened/has the benefit of continuity in terms of working to make antagonists that ramp up in relatability, but that in and of itself also has the double edge of not innovating super hard in terms of villain complexity

And yeah the One of the Good Ones is HILARIOUSLY ineffective, at make it a different flavor of Fed

Also cred for the buried historical context (i.e. French intervention in Mali vs real life, the Haitian name being the name of a famous Haitian revolutionary when Haiti was a French slave colony)

There's no way that Martin Freeman isn't going to continue to play One Of The Good Ones. The closest I could ever see the Marvel movie franchise going towards acknowledging that this is not how the CIA behaves is maybe having him kicked out of the CIA for being a lousy CIA agent.
