not anymore lol

finished the snap build of Lfrith last night which means today1 i get to go to the HOBBY STORE and buy PAINT and then PAINT THINGS

i’m limiting myself to shit i can buy locally; partially because i’m impatient and don’t want to pay for shipping, partially because i do want to Support Local Business2

my main concern is basically “is this plan too ambitious without an airbrush?” i know it’s feasible but am i gonna get halfway in and just be mad about how much more i still have to hand paint? idk! who knows! while i could just Go Buy An Airbrush3 but i don’t have a way to vent things outside4 and i can’t get a spray booth locally5 and i don’t really want to spend that money. SO. hand painting i guess.

but also i counted out how many pieces i have to fully paint for my plan and its A Lot. not all of them but enough that i know its gonna be a Process. this definitely isn’t me just trying to justify getting an airbrush setup anyway because i want one6. don’t worry about it.

oh yeah lfrith. if this works it’ll be cool. i just need to predict if i’m gonna be able to finish it without getting mad before i get started because leaving it unfinished is worse. that’s the hard part.

  1. or tomorrow depending on how tired i am after work

  2. we have one (1) hobby shop, it’s a hobbytown franchise that’s been around since i was a kid, their selection isn’t bad but it could be better

  3. i have heard from many people that the one harbor freight sells is actually a Shockingly Good entry level setup

  4. many claim that you can get away with spraying acrylics into a cardboard box since they’re not nearly as toxic as enamel and lacquer7 but that sounds like a really good way to get paint fucking everywhere and i’d rather not

  5. refer back to the impatient thing

  6. i do want one

  7. as long as you’re wearing a respirator

You do not need an airbrush for one gundam. Rattlecans and thin acrylic paints go a long way, even with shitty brushes.
However
If you are Serious about airbrushing models my recommendation is always a Patriot 105 with any tank-bearing compressor you can get your hands on. Tankless compressors can struggle to generate enough PSI to spray some acrylics. You are right that you need either ventilation or a respirator; a cardboard box and respirator works fine.
Airbrush supply can be tough to do locally. I am lucky, I have Coast Airbrush nearby. If you are okay supporting Remote Small Business they do shipping and have a great selection.

this is not the first time i have considered getting an airbrush setup, but it is the first time i've felt like my plans are Seriously Limited by not having one. i know that it's wholly possible for me to do it with rattle cans and handpainted acrylics but one of the colors i'm using is Pretty Specific and also very much not in rattlecan form. it's handpaintable, but it would be on a ton of pieces and my hands have a lot of trouble if i'm holding a brush for more than 5 minutes at a time due to Other Health Shit.

also i appreciate the recommendations!

If you're having trouble with brush grip the odds of that transferring over to having issues with holding the airbrush are very likely. The Patriot and most other cheaper airbrushes have the trigger on the top that's designed to be operated by the index finger while you hold the airbrush in a pencil-ish position. I haven't used any of the pistol style brushes but my friends who have like the Grex line.
