played a little bit of dwarf fortress last night and, after bouncing Hard off the game the first several times i played it, i am now able to claim that those were likely due to issues with menuing/discoverability, b/c a point and click version is working extremely well for me. i’m really looking forward to losing a bunch.

That makes me really happy. I hear this sentiment quite a bit and as an Old Dwarf Head I'm really psyched to see a whole new generation getting in on the *** FUN ***
while the circumstances behind the steam release are obviously less than ideal, the release itself is phenomenally well done, and it’s good to see it getting the support it deserves. i think it’s gonna be really good for the game overall to have a more accessible version that doesn’t skimp on anything mechanically, just improved UX.
I haven't really caught on to how people do this here, but me too, +1, emptychost or whatever. The new UI means I can use it.

Seeing as I've tried getting into DF twice now and bounced off both times due to the complexity involved in just using basic controls I'm very glad to see the new version working well for other people with the same problem. I'm not planning to pick it up too soon but I'll bump it up a spot or two in my list.
