FIRST OFF: was lucky enough to see this with a q&a with Jane Schoenbrun at Coolidge Corner. was incredible to see this in a packed house of near entirely trans people. my bestie got to experience The Future Liberals Want upon going to the bathroom and encountering only trans women in there. unfortunately, the moderator (a presumably-cis man) really did not seem to Get It and his questions reflected that. the audience questions, on the other hand, led to a lot of great insights from Jane and helped solidify a lot of what I was thinking about the movie.
ANYWAY.
this is an absolute masterpiece. a slow motion horror cautionary tale, woven with little details that hit you like a truck when you realize what they're reflecting. (i want to write about some specifics but I also want to keep the review spoiler-free. i think i can do spoiler tagged comments? can't remember. if you see one under this post then know that's what I did) (EDIT: you can't, i'll post about it on cohost later).
I've talked before about how much trouble I have talking about things that i like and specifically _why_ I like them. it's easier for me to describe why I _don't_ like things. this is unfortunate, because I _really_ like this movie.
I think I would generally recommend it to anyone, but keep in mind: you might not Get It, and that's ok. it isn't for everyone. but the people it's for are going to get bodyslammed by it, including people who might not know it's for them. I've seen a letterboxd review already of someone saying this movie is what convinced them to finally come out. I would be shocked if they're the only one.
a beautiful, gripping, terrifying look at a potential Bad End. go fucking see it, preferably in a theater, surrounded by other trans people if you can.
