my big thing right now is trying to figure out what rate stats should increment and decrement at. since i don't have a way to like. send notifications. i feel like they should only change while you've got the game actively open? none of the timings i've played with feel right tho. genuinely open to opinions on this.

Sure! So when things have a half life, there's like x-many days/weeks/years that go by before half of that thing has gone away from when you first measured it. Usually it's because of radiation in real life examples. There's a function that tells you the amount left of the thing after some time t that's called an Exponential Decay function. With the right kind of half-life (each thing that exponentially decays has a specific half-life), you could apply this function to a given stat to see how much is left given how many days or weeks of time there's been between plays. I have no idea if that would feel good from a game play perspective, but I thought it might be an interesting way to model stats declining over time without being too punishing
