happy wednesday! it’s wednesday this time. it’s a short week (since we posted patch notes on thursday last week), and we’ve each spent about 15 hours in zoom meetings interviewing since last week’s patch notes, so these ones are a little lighter than usual. one important change this week, and a couple smaller ones:

  • about a month ago, largely in response to people tagging other people’s posts into the Cohost Global Feed in replies, we made it so that replies with tags didn’t get listed on tag pages. that was obviously a pretty brute force change, and we’ve gone back in and made the rules more complex. now, replies with tags show up in tag pages if:
    • the reply is made by the same page as the original post; or
    • the tag on the reply was also on the original post. (e.g., a reply tagged “#fortnite #pizza hut” to an OP tagged “#doritos #fortnite” will show up in the tag page for “#fortnite” but not “#pizza hut”.)
  • we changed the way comment threads are displayed, to add a visual indicator of how deeply nested a comment is to the left side. especially on mobile, this lets us make the comment thread indentation smaller and nest comments deeper before they’re squished up against the right side of the comment box.
  • we improved the copy when you’re an adult with the “collapse adult content” setting disabled and you see an 18+ post with a clickthrough for one or more content warnings; it now no longer says an 18+ post is being hidden “according to your content preferences”, since it’s not.

coming up on cohost:

  • colin’s still working on letting you make your posts invisible to users who aren’t logged in. the meat of this change is really, really simple, but due to some design decisions we made earlier, the UI work is way more complicated than he expected. should be done in the next day or two, hopefully. after that, he’s going to work on fixing some reliability issues with the notifications page and dashboard.
  • jae’s doing some behind-the-scenes dev work: fixing our UI testing environment, and groundwork for moving us off of cloudflare onto another caching provider.
  • jess’s working on letting you add private notes about other pages for your future reference; she’s also got tag filtering almost done, but it’s blocked on colin’s UI changes, which touch the same code.
  • aidan’s designing some new features and answering your support mails.
  • most importantly, we hope to be able to introduce you to our new coworker next week!

until next time, thanks for using cohost :eggbug:

in reply to @staff's post:

The nested comments look great on mobile, but it is still very cramped after a couple replies on >1024px width. Also, I am worried about a position:fixed exploit I found. I made a bug report about a month ago and sent an email about it, but haven't gotten a response so I'm just commenting this here in case you haven't seen it.

All my Advent of Code spoiler-warning posts are now appearing as if they're 18+ content (which they are not).

My account is set to not see 18+ content - I don't recall why or how, but it doesn't seem like something I can change - so now I can't expand my own posts.
