we started a new fortress last night on stream, although i continued playing after the stream.
we embarked into the southern reaches of the world, inadvertently far from our parent civilization's (The Armor of Snarling) existing settlements1. we chose a region on the coast, with a river running through, only to learn fairly quickly that the river and ocean are frozen year-round.
we're up to 71 dwarfs currently and slowly growing the fortress. we've finally stood up our metal industry, and are beginning to set up our glass-making industry. trade and migrations are slow, as we're so far from the main settlements, but we've already had to fend off a few attacks (mostly kobold theives).
after the stream last night, we were attacked by the giantess Beachprides the Brave! fortunately, we already had a growing militia actively training, so everyone got out to the fight fairly quickly. the first to arrive at the scene was Dîshmab Nationscudgels, a hammerdwarf. She put up a valiant fight, but a hammerdwarf is not especially effective against a giantess. She bruised its feet and legs, before the giantess punched her so hard her head exploded. a brave death, commemorated with a statue recounting her deeds in her tomb.
after her death, two speardwarfs, Fikod Claspedrighteous and Såkzul Paintwindy, arrived at the fight. i'm unsure who landed the final blow, but they took down Beachprides without difficulty (side note: i should probably melt down all our hammers so we don't have to deal with this again).
oh also our jeweler got into a strange mood and crafted a sapphire door, claiming it as an heirloom. i replaced her bedroom door with it. it looks great.
