so, the mastodon instance i'm on (cybre.space) is going read-only at the end of the month1 and, while i don't use mastodon that much, i would like to migrate over to a new instance.

i realize asking this might be kicking the hornet's nest but: do any of y'all have suggestions on other instances i should be looking at? most of the ones that have been suggested so far are closed to new registration without invites

  1. this is not coming as a surprise, it was announced months ago, but i've been procrastinating migration b/c i've been a bit busy

working on getting setup on octodon.social

i'm running into trouble getting migrated over from my old account. i've got it setup as an alias, but it's still not letting me start the process from cybre.space. is this just something i have to wait to have go through the network??? there is very little documentation here for something that is presumably core to the theory of "federation works because if your instance shuts down you can go to a different one"

in reply to @jkap's post:

i think i can generate an invite for icosahedron.website; i moved there because it seemed stable (in the sense that the admin would not suddenly decide to power trip and cut off access to another instance i care about)

also they patched out one of my least favorite mastodon v4 frontend changes which i am pleased with

I was also on cybre.space (pour one out!); I liked hachyderm.io although it got REALLY big so I migrated to assemblag.es which has also been super nice vibe-wise and was pretty fast to get me an invite when I applied for one (also I can generate invites apparently)

i've been hosting my own and i am not enamored with the software, so i don't have any good recommendations of existing instances, but given you're busy with website here if you wanted to avoid any weird power imbalance issues or your instance going away again you might try a managed hosting provider for your own single user (or small assc-member only?) instance

Somehow the account I made on Mastadon.social has survived since 2018 while all others seem to have vanished to Iโ€™ll probably stick with that one due to inertia more than anything else

in reply to @jkap's post:

Pretty sure I had a similar problem moving to a small instance off .social and fixed it by following myself from the old .social account account, which is probably some quirk of federation not knowing that my new account or that server even exists.

I think there is a large influx of new users coming in right now, meaning the migration process might be slower than usual, especially in your case with plenty of people from your instace migrating around the same time! :)
