Lmao, just saw this post while halfway through the main video. I was curious if we had the whole video.
"...but are you making a precise statement?"
"Sure I am, look at the program."
"You look at it."
This is so wonderful but also:
Wow, English has changed a lot in the last 50 years, huh? Default-he seems so archaic!
Man if you took me back to 1970 I would absolutely fucking kill it as a programmer, holy crap.
I really actually love this. I wish the me 6 years ago who had written a game with the variables "thing" and "stuff" could've seen it
This is so cool, genuinely. The more I think about this film the more interesting I find it.
First, it's surprisingly relevant for new programmers despite being from 1975 and using outdated programming languages. Not only relevant, but the pedagogy is honestly quite good? The banter between the narrator and characters, lightly peppered with humor and thoughtful arguments, is much more engaging than a flat, didactic lecture.
Next, I really like this video as a time capsule for 1975 computer use. At this time, IBM was still the only game in town and computers small enough to fit on a desk were just barely becoming a thing. Microsoft and Apple would appear on the scene shortly after this. The narrator says "[B]ut we can do a lot better than we have been doing," which gives me the strong impression that this is an example of a nascent profession trying to get its act together at a time when basically no one knew what the fuck they were doing.
