modern dreamworks continues to surprise. stunning, creative animation has become table stakes for them. two bangers in a row (see: Bad Guys) feels like a pattern and a positive new direction. they are easily the best doing it right now. 

beyond the art, it’s a fun, well-paced film with great performances all around and some Jokes that landed way harder than i would have expected.

my big takeaway is something i wouldn’t have expected to say a year ago: if this team were to make a new shriek film (as was lightly teased at the end), i’d go see it. given what a nightmare the last two were, that’s a huge change.
