scattered thoughts, not edited, based on assumption because we are missing real info, etc etc
most interesting thing to me about the twitter API situation isn't that they suddenly shut down access for the most successful apps; anyone paying attention should have seen this was going to happen At Some Point1, doing it suddenly and without warning is par for the course with Twitter 2.02.
the interesting part is that it's still radio silence. it's been over 36 hours with no official word from anyone within twitter. yes, they don't have a communications department or devrel department anymore so no one can really Ask What's Happening from outside the company. but elon is addicted to posting. he is a man infamous for being completely unable to shut the fuck up. even during all this he's still been posting3 about Changes.
at this point the radio silence is just confusing. it's impossible for me to actually figure out why they're being like this. it's all tea leaves.
after all this, as always, we are left with one question:
-
musk's stated goal to make twitter.app an Everything App (whatever the fuck that means), along with the increased frequency of ads in the timeline and the move to a For You page by default, are goals that were always incompatible with third party clients; it was a matter of when, not if.
-
remember as well that twitter dramatically changed their API back in 2012 and again in 2018. fucking with the API may as well be a corporate pastime.
-
i am not interested in discussing the irony behind tweeting "transparency builds trust" during this. it should be manifestly obvious to all why this is dumb and also par for the course for the dumbest billionaire alive4.
-
most billionaires are dumbasses, or at least if they weren't always, their money has warped their worldview so much that they became dumbasses along the way. elon continues to take the cake, though, as the dumbest billionaire. or at least the dumbest we know about (see: earlier discussion about his inability to shut the fuck up)
