A universal experience for Dutch children is that their teachers force them to read books in their native language to pick up on things like subtext. The only problem is that books written by Dutch people tend to fucking suck. The most famous Dutch book is probably The Discovery of Heaven, and it's such a fucking slog that everybody just pretends to have read it.
Wow this is really interesting. I didn't think about the experience of being a language learner with a relatively small store of native language books! Also I didn't realize there weren't more Dutch classics
