The future of democracy is at stake!
Except, there's several things that rub me the wrong way about this. First, of course, there's the fact that we are constantly being told this - I can only wake up in alarm about wolves so often before I ignore the kid shouting. In this case it might be true, things are definitely scary out there - but then, here's the second thing, why is it so important that everyone give up their desires and vote for Biden, policies and age and everything else be damned? If democracy is at stake, and we're being asked to vote imperfectly for the sake of the country, why isn't it an option for Biden to step aside for the sake of the country? Or for some actually-popular policies to be enacted in order to bring people to the polls? Why is it always stick and never carrot? Why is it always us who has to compromise and never the stupid "it's my turn" seniority system?
And then there's the concern for democracy. It's really important to make sure we shut down any threat to democratic values, they say, while brokering deals with Saudi Arabia and loudly supporting Modi's government and selling F-16s to Erdogan. You know what? I don't think you guys care about democracy, I think you just care about your jobs.
And like, it's not like there's much of a choice. The system has been set up so there isn't. But I'm not buying the line.
