anyway i realized that the FDA probably had a feed for food recalls i could subscribe to and really this should just be the standard way we all get news or at least press releases about these things. its just the ideal possible way to convey important information

I got back into RSS recently primarily for webcomics, but I keep finding new things to do with it (like this! thank you!) and it's such a useful thing to have set up. just a shame it's not like, considered as much as it used to be.
Assuming your feed updates in time.
I have a Firefox extension that lets me subscribe to RSS feeds, and it can take a while for some of those feeds to refresh.
i'm not sure exactly how rss works, but the reader i use lets you manually check for updates. its not perfect but it SEEMS pretty quick to find updates when i test them with my own site.
i think some of the downsides to RSS would be solved by wider adoption tbh; like, those fda feeds don't have the boar's head deli meat recall that made me think of this, which i don't love, but i'm sure if more ppl used that feed the FDA would probably prioritize it as much if not more than press releases, since it wouldn't really create much more work.
