Nicotiana alata is also called jasmine tobacco. the white flowers only open and release their scent at night, sweet and heady and yes, a little like jasmine. if i pick a flower during the day i can hardly smell anything.
it's not the kind of tobacco to smoke. not that i have a setup for curing tobacco leaves properly. these ornamental varieties haven't exactly been selected for flavor, and probably have more alkaloids than nicotine. but i do love having a tobacco plant or two around for their interesting vibes and nice flowers. i have seen some sphinx moths visiting this one but the flower corolla seems too long even for them.
