i was today years old when tati told me that the social custom on discord with the “do not disturb” is to not send messages to people while that is on so my apologies if i’ve done that to any of yall despite how obvious this may seem it was not to me lmao

That's so weird to me because I'm always on dnd and several friends are always on dnd. For me it is more I just don't like the little notification that goes off and prefer to not check my DMs all the time.

in reply to @julez's post:

in general I think of dnd in "instant" messaging apps as setting expectations for the sender about whether they are likely to get an immediate response.

you no longer set yourself as away because apps want to do presence detection automatically, but if you don't want to be marked available even though you came back to the computer dnd is sometimes the only option.

it may also fend off lower priority messages, but a real don't talk to me is invisible or signing off imo.

I always viewed the do not disturb icon as "I am busy and may not respond immediately" but I've never viewed it as "do not message me at all". I think it's one of those things where it might be a case by case basis 🤔

My interpretation of 'do not disturb' is "I'm busy and I don't want to hear the ring bell for each notification. I'll get to you eventually when I'm done"

Which, like, is also my modus operandi when I'm not in dnd mode, but it a) does not play the bell sound and b) lets whoever is messaging me that I'm not answering anytime soon
