I mean, enough of a reason to vote the fucking Tories out.
I know some people won't shift their arses to do anything for any other group of people if they can't see a connection between that group's welfare and their own.
Most decent people would already be horrified that some refugees are being driven to suicide attempts by fear of being deported to Rwanda. That in itself is a good enough reason to get the fucking Tories out.
But I know some people won't think that way, their miserable souls too atrophied to find a spark of caring for any other group not their own. Since I've typed out an entire train of thought aimed at that type of person, I might as well copy paste that here too. (In response to "You believe the whole election and everyone’s voting choice should rest on one policy?" by someone with a suspiciously terfy username over on Bsky. Normally I'd just block because I'm suspicious about the username. But I do think there's potentially some value to detailing this train of thought for any other "but why should I care about this one policy that sees refugees being persecuted to the brink of suicide" types):
Protecting vulnerable refugees has a knock on effect for other vulnerable groups too. The govt establishing a benchmark that normalises forcible deportation of one group can be used to justify future persecution of others too. So we should practice solidarity, get the Tories out, stop the flights.
In the future, Tories can easily pivot from: "We are giving refugees good opportunities in Rwanda" to the likes of: "Poor people in the UK have a chance for a fresh start in Rwanda", or "political dissidents in the UK could be sent to Rwanda as they don't want to be here." This needs stopping now.
Another possible through line: The Nationality and Borders Act 2022 means >6 million Brits (predominantly PoC), who can be argued to have access to another citizenship elsewhere, can have British citizenship stripped by the Home Secretary, w/o warning, for being seen as security risks. If Rwanda is willing to offer a path to citizenship to offshored refugees deported from Britain, it's not a big jump for a Tory Home Sec to argue this enables existing UK citizens to avoid being rendered stateless. Therefore making it acceptable to strip their citizenship & deport them to Rwanda.
This is one of those times when the truism: "They came for Group X and I said nothing. Then they came for Group Y and I said nothing. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak up for me" really applies. So I would encourage folks to practice solidarity and stave off the Tories now.
But also, it really is the kind of time when you either learn to practice solidarity, or you will rapidly learn that the leopards are coming to eat your face too.
