I've talked about it before, but it's insane that as a black person in America, you're taught/learn from an early age that people don't like you, don't trust you, but somehow know everything about you (that they've learned from stereotypes and pop culture) and you're just supposed to accept it as a part of life

Especially as someone with mental illness!

I learned how to swim when I was like 5-years-old and do you know how many times I've heard "I didn't black people could swim"

or listening to other music besides hip hop and R&B

or playing videogames other than Madden or fighting games

There’s a weird online phenomena also, where everyone is presumed white / straight / male until proven otherwise
I’ve known people become uncomfortable or completely change how they treat an online interaction after learning that someone isn’t what they expected

I think it’s important for folks of any minority to be quite loud and proud of who they are in their profiles etc., be as visible as possible to help break down those stereotypes

Unfortunately, that's not weird. Everyone assumes everyone else is "the default" until proven otherwise, whatever their upbringing has constructed "the default" to be in their heads.

This struck me when I was a teenager, and I noticed that works of fiction only pointed out a character's ethnicity or nationality if it was different from the majority.
