Room - Natural Magic (Pawsitive)!

With stairs to the surface in one direction and a dormant molasses shaft in the other, Doddot makes good on a golden era dwarven adage.

"Things can always go down."

It's a versatile saying.

Doddot blasts a hole in the ground of an empty chamber, sending tremors through the hold. A spicy, strange air rises to meet her. She lowers a ladder in return, grunting approval when it meets the floor a reasonable distance later. It's always nice to find the caves are built to code.

Unable to get a good look at the cavern below, Doddot starts her descent. So far, so good, until a squishy mass settles on her back. A careful squeeze reminds Doddot of a suede water balloon or velour wine skin, two household dwarven items. A less careful squeeze ruptures the unseen growth, sending a cold trickle of static down her back. It evaporates with scintillating tingles as fucking something digs claws into her back.

Doddot flails her way to the cave floor, hooting and hollering the whole way.

When she's finally able to light her lantern, Doddot comes face to face with a cat. It is, unfortunately, one of those crusty white ones with the messed up faces, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Doddot loves this cat immediately.

Smitten and confused, Doddot raises her lantern. Suspended all around her are large bulbs swollen by internal pressure. Each absorbs the light of Doddot's lantern, re-emitting it as a dispersed glow. Silhouetted against the light of each sleeps feline forms. Doddot looks between the recently-hatched cat and those still dreaming. Not all of the dreamers are as small as he is.

Doddot is rightly smug that she got mages down here immediately.

Summary

  • 3♣️ - Natural Formation - Naturally Occurring Magic (Good)

The Hold

  • Library - 2/5 Mage Occupancy, Good Magic: Nurse's Sigil (when Units move through this square, they recover all of their STR).
  • Kitchen - +50% STR to units housed in adjacent squares (current: Library).
  • Forge - 0/1 Cannon Occupancy, can build traps.
  • Volcanic Shaft - Dormant. For now.
  • Natural Magic - Good Magic: Pawtral (May pay 5 Trade Goods to roll 1d4. Rolling a 4 gains a friendly Sabretooth, 20 STR + 2 movement, spawns from Kennel during combat. Also, lovable cats.)

Resources

  • Resources - 1/50
  • Trade Goods - 5/50
  • Soldiers - 5/X - 5 STR
  • Mages - 2/5 - 4 (+2) STR
  • Cannons - 0/1 - 30 STR, 1/fight

World Notes

  • Doddot Dimorc - The ostensible protagonist mining the caves beneath her family hold. A bit dim herself.
  • Hamgard - The chef! He's never been a chef before, but he's figuring it out quickly.
  • Sandwich - Doddot's gross white cat, hatchling of the Pawtral magical room. He accompanies Doddot on her adventures.

Takeaways

  • I feel like I've been a lucky sod so far, but I can't tell if I'm about to choke on this silver spoon. If nothing else, my stairs feel quite defensible.
  • At first I thought it was fluke chance how frequently cats come up in these solo games, but I now think it's a shared responsibility between me and the devs. I wouldn't be surprised if the Venn diagram of 'solo game creators' and 'likes cats' is near a circle.

Hell yeah, thanks!

I'm glad the suede water balloon got you! I kept going back and forth between feeling like suede or like overripe fruit skin but worried about the possible analogies, haha!
