This image made me genuinely melancholic. Big Tech has sold us so many advances in how live and play, but they threw out what made technology fun and playful. I miss when gadgets had special jobs, and didn't try to do everything ever all at once, and even then, the gadgets that tried never succeeded at that; they just tried their best. I hate that our selection of technology is all just shiny black rectangles.
I don't want OLED touchscreens. I don't want wireless charging. I don't want content algorithms. I don't want smart this, or "AI powered" that.
I want tactility. I want redundancies. I want longevity. I want fucking buttons!
I'm doing my best to go back with what I have. I still have an iPhone 5s, and I ain't changing it. I wanted to take my phone and pull out all the unnecessary shit in it. So now all it does is ring and text, and check emails, weather, and time. I pulled out the music and podcasts from my phone and got an old 16gb iPod Nano to put them in. Now my entertainment doesn't snitch on me to ad execs, and I have this brave little thing in my pocket that does one thing and that one thing pretty fucking well, and world within it isnt flat fucking panels and soulless minimalist buttons. Each icon is glass bauble, text sits engraved on coloured glass, complete with shading. Slider switchings look like fucking switches. It doesn't even connect to the Internet.
I hope we see playful tech again...
