happy monday! you haven’t heard from us for a bit because we haven’t shipped anything major in a bit! jae’s back from vacation and is putting the finishing touches on Asks, and today we’ve got something new.

a common feature request that we get is for a direct messaging system. people often need a way to contact each other privately and, since we don’t have DMs, there’s not an obvious way to do that.

we’ve said before that we have no intention of ever shipping direct messages for several reasons — most important among them that we believe other platforms do a better job than we ever could, and we really do not want to be in a position where we have to moderate DMs.

today we’re shipping Profile Links, an easy way to list contact information in your profile with privacy controls built in. as of now, you can set links to be visible to: everyone, only logged-in users, or only pages you follow. despite the name, they don’t have to be links; you can put whatever you want in there!

you can set these up from your edit profile page. we’d love to hear your feedback on how we can improve this feature moving forward.

that’s all for now! we’re hoping to have asks out this week as well, after which jae will be getting started on user tipping.

thanks, as always, for using cohost! :eggbug:

in reply to @staff's post:

are asks conceptually close enough to comments that implementing the ability to publicly respond to asks would make it easier to also have an official system for making a new post replying to a comment? that's not necessarily a feature I've ever been like "damn I wish they had that," but it sounds like it could secretly be a thing that's feasible

Some feedback:
Without the context of this post, it is confusing why there is a "link" field at the top of the profile edit form, and an "edit profile links" field at the bottom of the form. It seems like duplicate functionality, and it obscures the use of "profile links". You have to be curious enough to click the "add link" button, to see the privacy controls. We think "Contact Info" might be cleaner wording, though we don't know how you would expose the privacy settings.

Maybe:

Contact Info (header)
Set Link Privacy (dropdown menu) | Add link (button)

Ahm. Having this info at the bottom of the profile feels a bit weird, too. We feel that it would work better near the top, next to the other profile information. This might be especially valid for beings that have veeeeery long bios, though that's certainly up to individual preference.

"you can set links to be visible to: everyone, only logged-in users, or only pages you follow. "

I immediately just decided to use this to add a section that's just "Following you: Quilynn follows you!" haha. I might migrate my profile links also but I feel like they're just fine where they are
