discord's new font sucks. it is EXTRAORDINARILY eyestrain-inducing. here is how to go back to the old one! quick note: don't copy/include any backticks (`) in the instructions; they're just the tech equivalent of quotes since quotes often do specific things in code.

  1. go to %AppData%/Discord/ in your file browser on windows, or ~/Library/Application Support/discord/ on mac. open settings.json in any text-editing program (even notepad will do.)
  2. in settings.json, add a comma after the last line but before the final } symbol. then add a new line, two spaces, and the following text: "DANGEROUS_ENABLE_DEVTOOLS_ONLY_ENABLE_IF_YOU_KNOW_WHAT_YOURE_DOING": truea screencap of the file mentioned above(like so. my text editor is a full code editor so don't worry about colors and stuff; as long as the text matches, you're fine.)
  3. save the file. then, fully restart discord. clicking the x button probably won't be enough; you may have to kill it in your task manager.
  4. once you have restarted discord, press CTRL + SHIFT + I on windows, or CMD + OPTION + I on mac. this should open a panel to the right.the discord devtools panel
  5. about halfway down the panel, you'll see a little tab called "styles" followed by a search filter box. in that box, type :root. scroll down the list until you see a section with the words font-primary in it.
  6. delete "gg sans", from the list of fonts, including the comma and quotes.the styles panel in discord devtoolsthe panel, with "gg sans" already deleted from the list
    discord should instantly update after this, getting rid of the old font! you can also delete gg sans from the font-display list too; i don't know where font-display is used, but it can't hurt.

kudos to this reddit post for providing the first half of these instructions for me, and to @veryroundbird and @binary for tipping me off to the location of the file on mac.

in reply to @yrgirlkv's post:

For mac it's [User] -> Library -> Application Support -> discord -> settings.json. Opening the devtools window is OPTION+CMD+I, it's also under View -> Developer.

Also thanks for this! Hate the new font so much.

pro tip, the old discord font is "whitney", which no longer shows up on the list of fonts but you can download it for free and once it's on your computer you can type it into the code in place of gg sans and it'll look like it used to! (the usernames and stuff aren't bolded anymore for some reason, but aside from that it looks normal, i think?)

also, font-display is what's used for the headers!

If you're interested in a permanent solution that's far more lightweight than something like BetterDiscord, I recommend OpenAsar, which is cross-platform (Windows, macOS and Linux), open-source, and has custom CSS support.

After installing it you can just paste in something like this:

:root{ --font-primary: "gg sans","Noto Sans","Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; --font-display: "gg sans","Noto Sans","Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; --font-headline: "ABC Ginto Nord","Noto Sans","Helvetica Neue",Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; }

replacing gg sans with whatever font you prefer. You could also use @import to use fonts from Google Fonts.

(Personally I mostly like gg sans, since it has better support for a language I speak, but it really does have some glaring issues, which I hope Discord addresses soon. You really should be able to just pick your own font, anyway...)
