True, though I have a feeling I'm far too early in my studies to make much sense of what's going on here. Still, it might be a good thing to have on hand to see how I'm progressing? I'll give it some thought ^_^

EEK sorry I was wrong, there is not much furigana for this series 😓 I typed this while looking at the one page where there is a lot of furigana, lol. Anyway, good luck with your studies and hope this series gets translated and/or you feel comfortable reading this in Japanese soon!!

No worries! Thanks for letting me know, regardless. I think I'll hold off anyway, and maybe/probably start my Japanese media journey (??) with old Famicom games (RPGs or adventure/mystery games), as surely most of them avoid kanji?

They do BUT in my experience, no-kanji games/books/etc are paradoxically MUCH harder to read than kanji+furigana. It can be really hard to tell where one word ends and the next begins, or which words are proper nouns, that kinda thing. It would kinda be like if you tried to read something in English, but everything was lowercase and there were no spaces between words 😱

I personally recommend you look for stuff with kanji+furigana instead, it is much easier to read and look stuff up. Seriously I cannot stress how much easier it is to sight-read stuff this way. I believe the Pokemon games have furigana, or at least the more modern ones. (Pokemon is my personally rec since a lot of the moves and abilities are everyday and common verbs.) I think DQ, Layton, and Animal Crossing also have furigana, but it's been a while and I may be wrong, lol. But in any case, don't be like me, the weirdo who bought a lot of hiragana-only books thinking that it would be easier than dealing with kanji, only to be utterly defeated after only a couple pages 😅

I've heard others say what you said here -- hell, I may have heard YOU say it here or elsewhere! Anyway, point taken. I guess I was hoping Famicom or GameBoy games would be a good place to start because they were generally aimed at younger people AND basically had to be shorter, more streamlined experiences due to space and resolution limitations.

That said, I see what you mean. Also, I am learning kanji, so I'm not afraid of it -- or won't be once I've built up a nice enough vocabulary.

I can't help but wonder if an early Animal Crossing might be the best option for me at this point. Pokemon sounds nice, too, but they tend to be longer games and I'm not sure I'm up for tackling such a thing at this point (or anytime soon, to be honest).

At any rate, thanks again for the ideas/suggestions. I appreciate them!

Animal Crossing would imo be very cool since the language there is pretty laid back and chill (as opposed to, idk, tons of fantasy or ye olde language), plus you get all that vocab for furniture and whatnot!

Kinda makes me want to start a new save file in Japanese 👀

Yeah! I still think I'm too early in my studies for such an undertaking, though. Maybe in a month or two. And then the question becomes: do I start with the DS, 3DS, or Switch game? I'd usually say the DS one since I've never really played it, but it might be a bit painful to play at this point in time...
