I never wanted to make a difference

I just wanted to make animated gifs.

I cannot for the life of me get it to scan a couple of games I want to play, but they run just fine if I use the file browser. I think I am going to have to resort to editing the library JSON to get it to do what I need.

I don't care much for the EmulationStation (Desktop Edition) UI overall but, it actually works? it finds my games? it lets me correct matches easily if it gets things wrong? man fuck RetroArch

Speaking of heck retroarch, in addition to having a crummy interface, they have a history of KF-adjacent harassing of devs who didn’t agree with how RA was using their emulators (like DuckStation and bSNES; RIP Near). And even if you don’t use the RA frontend, most alternatives use RetroArch’s backend, which is called libretro. (To wit, from what I can gather from scouring the project wiki, RetroDECK also uses RA/libretro on their backend.)

I don’t think the above info is widely known, so I don’t want to throw shade on users or developers who use RetroArch/libretro. But I personally don’t feel great using their stuff, and it really is tough figuring out which projects use their stuff in the backend. So: can any of you Friends of Eggbug recommend some emulation tools/interfaces that don’t use libretro, or at least can be configured to bypass libretro entirely? I’d appreciate it, thanks!
