I'm a big fan of 8bitdo's controllers, like the SN30 Pro 2 because it can also double as a really good wireless Switch controller. But if you just need a basic wired controller there are probably cheaper options.

I second the F310 as the best budget option, with the downsides being it's wired, no rumble, and it has an unusually squishy dpad. For the high end, I like the Xbox One controller and haven't felt the need to try anything else.

oh sweet i was wondering vaguely if a used xbox controller would work (but too lazy to investigate 😬) maybe ill check the pawn shop later

Be careful, only the newer ones will work with Bluetooth, otherwise you will need a dongle for wireless.
