one of the weirdest mass hallucinations I've encountered about social media is everyone's conviction that you can "mute threads." i.e. "if you don't want to see x content just mute my thread." you... can't. you can't mute someone else's thread on twitter.
you can mute a person and have that person not appear on your dash.
you can mute a conversation and have notifications from it not appear
you can mute a tweet of your own and notifications from that do not appear.
you cannot mute someone else's thread and have it not appear in your timeline. you cannot do this on Mastodon either, but everyone is convinced you can. I don't think you can do this on tumblr either?? you may be able to with an extension though which makes this even more confusing.
so when I said a few weeks ago on my mastodon instance that it was frustrating cohost didn't have a way of muting one thread that was getting spammed into a tag I follow, I had a friends be like "lol cohost doesn't have this thing that every other social media has? functional website."
no, it didn't have a thing no other social media has.
and hilariously, now, cohost does let you do that. functional website indeed.
anyway it's just fascinating that people are just experiencing a very low level mass hallucination that a feature exists and indeed is ubiquitous simply because everyone ELSE clearly believes it exists... even though no one has thought to check. what's the moral of this? hell if I know, it's just bizarre.
