god, rich people really are bad at crimes. you see columbo and you're like damn, no one is THAT bad at getting away with murder, and then you read about real life murder cases and you're like damn. guess they are.

it could be that police are incapable of solving anything but stupid crimes and we don't get to read about any of the reasonably clever ones because they got away with it so completely

That, and many instances of cops managing to solve competently-committed crimes end up running aground at trial because they didn't put the necessary person-hours and effort into the investigation to do it right, instead resorting to techniques that produce inadmissible evidence.

But it's easier to violate constitutional law and admissibility rules than hunt down a metaphorical smoking gun that can't be taken out of the picture by a good defence. They often get away with it, due to many structural factors, so.

in reply to @geometric's post:

I think it's something like 50% of all murders go unsolved. Obviously there's plenty of murders the police are systemically uninterested in solving, but they're also just fundamentally bad at their job. So yeah smart people definitely get away with murder just by putting a little effort in.

I would simply use radio controlled cars with explosives to murder people while avoiding having starred in a cult classic TV show that the city’s bat-themed superhero is obsessed with.
