just got back from the movie theater, and I thought I'd talk about the movie here. quick tl;dr: its a fun time, a solid makoto shinkai movie, go out to the theaters to catch it if you can. it's a pretty familiar shinkai movie, if you know all the ways ppl meme and dunk on him, but also there's some pretty solid emotional themes there to think about and chew on.... with your heart I guess I don't actually know how to express the idea of just vibing with your heart

okay, movie talk/spoilers below:

  • First off, some genuine earnest thoughts:

I thought the general religious/spiritual themes of the movie were honestly kinda touching. I think that thinking about places in terms of "remember the people who lived here, listen to their voices" is a very empathetic way of looking at things and it really resonates with me. The movie uses it in terms of ruined areas, but I think this is an idea that can be applied to basically anything.

everywhere around us the world is full of ppl with unique perspectives and voices, we basically tune them out every day but, y'know, they're still there. and each city and town in the world is built on top of the cities and towns that existed before them, whether that just means an old main street that doesn't exist anymore, or a settlement that got colonized, or anything the way down to the ancient peoples that existed in a time long past.

or, we could even think about this terms of just like, discord servers or something. think about any discord you're in that has more than a dozen people in it and think about all the individual lives that you catch glimpses of.

the world is full of people, and thats what makes it beautiful. and thats what the movie touches on here

  • okay now some shitposts
  • i'd rate suzume as an 8 on the scale of "Makoto Shinkai Protagonists Who Do Absurd Things In The Name of Love" (the 10 goes to the main couple of the weather girl movie. if you saw it you know why lmao)
  • i actually spent the first third or so of the movie going "wow finally we're actually getting a shinkai movie that isn't about the main character doing crazy things for love" but i was a fool counting my chickens before they hatched. of course it was
  • mcdonalds!!!! (when mcdonalds showed up i screamed in my head like that one patent illustration)
  • when i walked out of the movie i thought the convertible guy was the best but on further reflection the bar ladies were the actual best characters
  • i do want the convertible guys spotify playlist though
