i felt very much the same about the first few areas feeling very "fangamey" as you put it. wild east was definitely where it became real shit, and where the story actually started to take shape instead of just being a bunch of areas in sequence.
while it didn't make me cry, i did end up playing the entire second half of the game when i said i was only going to play for an hour, all the while saying "holy shit video games" every time something emotional happened. especially the final boss and ending because god damn
while nothing will hit exactly the same as undertale without transporting me back in time to 2016, this got probably as close as anything else will get
