Chocolatier: Ghirardelli
Flavor: Double Chocolate
What I Paid: $3.99
I've been reviewing too many good chocolates lately. Let's ruin that! Yeah, not being very subtle about how I feel about this one am I?
This bar from Ghirardelli describes itself as "Milk Chocolate with Chocolate Filling." When I first read this description, I was hoping that the filling was a ganache, or maybe a nice chocolate creme.... y'all.... it's chocolate syrup. Like, a slightly thicker version of the Hersheys stuff. That's an... interesting choice.
The milk chocolate used in this bar is the same that Ghirardelli uses in its other milk chocolate products. It has a nice strong sugar, vanilla, and cream flavor set against a background of light, clean cocoa. The flavor here is not bad honestly. Sure, this milk chocolate is a little too sweet for me, maybe even a tad cloying, but it's not terrible. No, the real failure here is the filling.
The filling of this bar is tooth-hurtingly sweet. It literally tastes like corn syrup that has had a light sprinkling of cocoa powder added to it. And to make things even worst, the filling also has a weird chemically aftertaste that I'm not even entirely sure how to describe. The closest I can get is this: It's like they were going for an artificial brownie flavor, and somehow failed the assignment. It's gross.
Needless to say, I do not like this bar. It's not bad enough for me to throw out - I will finish eating it. But I would never, ever get it again. Do not recommend.
