the more i think about it the more i think sonic bosses should be more like normal levels than boss fights, and i think that one video by pariah695 on youtube proposes a pretty good design idea worth trying: make the boss arenas more like mini momentum playgrounds and make it so the faster you’re going when you hit them, the more damage you do, and having negligible speed does no damage.

the thing i want to add to this: imagine, for example, how fucking cool sonic 3 and knuckles doomsday zone would be if you actually ran through the asteroids normally between flight sections. and they were the hardest platforming challenges in the game, the final test of you as a player and of sonic in the story, and you needed the extra agility that super and hyper sonic provide to actually be able to clear them. and your speed is carried throughout, so if you manage to get through it flawlessly, you can hit robotnik¹ with the highest speed you possibly can and do the most amount of damage. doesn’t that sound FUCKING SICK??

normally i prefer eggman, but sometimes, almost always in the context of the genesis games, saying “robotnik” feels more right. why? it’s the same guy. i think for some reason my brain associates “robotnik” more specifically with the genesis games, which is weird because i don’t have a fondness for the american lore over the japanese lore. i feel like it’s probably just osmosis from absorbing different people using the different names at different times, and people seem to be a lot more inclined to call classic eggman “robotnik” than they are post-adventure eggman. probably because people who talk about the classic games in english are more likely on average to prefer “robotnik” due to being more likely to have grown up with that name. which is kind of strange considering adventure is when they finally standardized the names, lmao, but being fair eggman has been the primary one officially from then on
