I get so annoyed when otherwise serious journalists start going "aliens?????" whenever the military shoots down something they don't fully recognize.

It's never aliens. It's always a fucking weather balloon. Please report on things that are actually happening.

Its only become like this because "UFO" has been conflated to mean "flying saucer" when it literally means "unidentified flying object"

So when someone asks me if i believe in UFOs, i look at them like they're stupid and say "do i believe in flying objects we havent identified the nature of at present time? No shit i do..." Then they clarify to mean aliems, and i point out to them that words have meanings

in reply to @zdarlight's post:

it's almost definitely on purpose at this point, imo. they do have several official names for "Unidentified Flying Objects" (one of them is UAP, unidentified aerial phenomena), but i think a bigger question is why haven't they already? what do they gain in the confusion?

They gain citizens running interference for them when someone brings up UFO sightings in earnest to try to look into possible illegal military aerial experiments or surveillance with the "aLiEnS dOnT eXiSt!" Line.
