I actually have to admit that the Windows 11's "Fluent" design for icons is really good, at least to me. It has the right balance between flat and skeumorphic via subtle but still noticeable gradients. It is colourful and vibrant (though not too much so!) and allows for some realism, while still being fairly abstract and allowing for interpretation. It's not like Material design where colours are always kind of limited (in M1 and M2 you had a limited palette β€” and in Material 3, you're subject to what the user wants1) and it's also not weird-feeling like Apple's designs (which are okay but don't ever feel right to me).

I know Windows 11 gets a lot of shit β€” a lot of it deserved β€” but I think this design is good!

  1. I might have gotten these wrong, and of couse you can always just ignore the spec or recommendations, but Google really expects that you will use the material palette.
