the other day i beat disco elysium. i'm still not sure all i want to say about it. i'm not really knowledgeable enough to understand all of the messages in the game, all of the different political views and various critiques they're putting out there.

i honestly can't believe this game actually exists. the sheer amount of writing and branching choices is absurd. and it's all voice acted? good lord. someone took the time to write this whole history with all this detailed information about whole countries that you'll never ever see firsthand. there's way more lore than a lot of those big fantasy RPGs, and it feels really well thought out too.

I feel like disco elysium is--stick with me here for a moment, please--the dark souls of narrative games. by that I am thinking of just two things.

Firstly, there are huge chunks of the game that are optional and you probably won't see in a playthrough without doing specific stuff. spending time and resources on content that not everyone will see always felt brave to me, in a world where time and resources are limited.

Secondly, it's a narrative game so good that I'm unable to stop comparing every other narrative game to it at times. not necessarily in a way like "disco elysium did it better", but at least like "huh, disco elysium did it this other way".

going back to the point about optional content, this is probably the first narrative game where I feel like doing another playthrough. literally never felt that way before, even with narrative masterpieces like kentucky route zero. with the types of dialogue choices, I actually feel like I could have a substantially different experience with a different "build". I played with 5/2/1/4 stats, but I think I want to go again with 1/5/5/1 or something ridiculous like that, with half light as my signature skill.

there aren't a lot of games that make me actually laugh aloud. the only other one that readily comes to mind is octodad, but that's simple slapstick. i found myself laughing a lot while playing disco elysium from the sheer amount of ridiculous choices I could do.

finally, i'm now extremely glad that i can tap into the enormous well of fan art, jokes, etc. about this game. boy, is it vast. what a gift.

Coming off of such a heavy story/reading game like pentiment I wasn't sure I'd want to jump into another one right away, but I started disco elysium, and it is phenomenal from the first minute. I'm totally hooked right away. The writing is so good I keep laughing aloud every few minutes
