Having been asked both at work (???, not a good sign) and personally if I’ve played around with ChatGPT, the answer is “yes” and no it has not changed my opinions about The Future. However, I am told that these are powerful tools for aspiring authors, which is what I am, I guess, so… you know. Needs must.

I have (as I’ve said), tortured GPT-3 and AI21 into producing narrative fiction. It is an extremely tedious process if you want anything that is readable. It has struck me that I would like to try and explain the reasons why a little better, but I’m not sure that’s a good use of my time.

Or, well… actually, my “desire” to “write” a story using “AI” so that I can come up with a Cohost-Style Short Essay™ about it is at sharp odds with my understanding that properly explaining how dumb this entire idea is requires more coding than I really want to put into it.

Haha, who am I kidding? The Python is already written; I’ll have something up tomorrow :P

As a Fun Teaser: right now the story output is 54 lines long. The story input required to produce that output is 557 lines long.

Also: a snippet of generated text, on Troubledogs:

"I don't..." June started to say, then caught herself, because she did know who he was. She recognized him from folktales, growing up in Tucson. From the sound of howling, late at night, when her Girl Scouts troop went camping. "Coyote?" she asked.

He grinned. "Yeah," he said, nuzzling her neck. "You like?"

"No," June said.

Alas.
