using color has always been kind of a big hurdle for me as an artist. i started out self-taught and most of my knowledge comes from trial and error. some of my college classes made some ideas click with me, like basic color theory and conditioning myself to look at the whole of a picture more than the details...
but properly using color has been challenging to pick up. like, i'll read about things and see what other people do, but it doesn't actually stick. it just kind of rolls off me. so over the years, it's been up to just throwing things down and seeing what ends up working and what fails. adjusting saturation, using color overlays, messing with filters. trying to understand something.
the actual feeling of how colors work together is starting to become a bit clearer to me, though it's still something i have a hard time verbalizing... it's odd. sometimes i learn things in a very mechanical, textbook way. but other times, it's kind of like untangling this huge mess of threads.
lately i've been looking at context. how does a color register to the eye when it's placed next to a different color? what makes a shade of grey turn into blue or red? i'm trying to push myself outside of my boundaries and comfort zones, away from habits.
art has been kind of estranged from me these past few months, but i hope i can get back into it soon. i want to learn more about making colors work.
