just joined "bluesky" and have learned right off the bat (thanks to a post in the "what's hot" feed) that they opened their website to invite-limited public not just before blocks, but also before adding filtering to prevent children from being served adult content, or any ability to mark a post as being adult content

once again I'm pretty thankful about having signed up for apparently the only website whose founders elected to put some thought into the process before opening it to the public, or indeed at all

looking into it more, bluesky does offer this, currently. given that you can't mark a post as containing any of this when you make it, I assume they're using AI to detect porn and nudity.

the structure of the site so far seems like they think the problem with hate groups on a platform is that people who don't want to see their content can see it, not that they're on the platform

they seem to be under the impression they're creating the TCP/IP of microblogging and intend to outsource the moderation workload to anyone who isn't them

iirc they use thehive dot ai for this. yes, their solution to moderation is "more capitalism" instead of actual measures for user consent and safety.

that was bluesky saying they'd exclude nudes from the default "what's hot" algorithm feed (there will be a "marketplace" of algorithmic feeds, whatever that means)

turned out what actually happened was that the protocol didn't really cap how many people a single post could tag, and it also didn't actually tie tags to the post text (tags are technically post metadata, not post content)

so if someone were to use a modded client, they could tag several hundred people in a single post, and make up whatever text they wanted for the tag. and that's exactly what happened

I haven't heard much about bluesky so far, but what I did hear sounded quite positive ... silly me for feeling mildly optimistic about it 😂

There's something really frustrating about the original twitter founder making a twitter clone and somehow still making really obvious fuckups like this. One resource that the bluesky team have in abundance is hindsight and historical pitfalls that they could avoid going forward. My guess is that "move fast and break things" mentality took over.

Yep, they confirmed as much and you can look at their server implementation, at the moment every post is passed to HiveAI for classification (that smells like a GDPR/COPPA violation but IANAL). The promise is that "users" and "server admins" will be able to label stuff going forward which uuuuuuh idk how they expect it will go because I can't imagine this won't be weaponized 🙃

But hey, "it's a beta! if you're not comfortable don't use it¹". At this point I've stopped using it after 2 weeks because the circlejerk that amounts to "wow this is so much better than Mastodon/Twitter, the vibes are so good" is annoying to read because shit WILL hit the fan when it's truly open and any schmuck can run their server and I won't believe otherwise until I see it.
