NixOS and the Nix ecosystem in general are a good example of hammerware (a term I coined for "software that solves all your problems by turning them into problems with that software) and how it can genuinely make a lot of things easier. Sure, the number of problems you have doesn't directly decrease, but by turning them all into Nix problems you have a unified and consistent toolset to deal with them. I really hope stuff like that becomes more usable and accessible over time so that maybe one day self-hosting isn't As Much Of A Complete Shitshow As It Is Now™

when I see nix, I see another layer of configuration drift, and that scares me

but perhaps I spend too much time staring into the abyss; maybe I should take a leap

it is an (eventually) consistent toolset, even if the mix language is kinda-obtuse

It's cool but I think I'd recommend using it as a package manager layered on top of an existing system for desktop use.

I've had to drag a monitor and keyboard to my homeserver that I went all the way in on NixOS on far too many times while learning the ropes and ended up with something that I'm still not entirely happy with mainly because of multiuser permissions stuff where I want my partner to be able to freely configure and install packages on their account but not be able to mess with system configuration.

I chose a really difficult project to learn how to package and write services on which may have been a mistake: source engine dedicated server for a mostly dead mod that relies on source engine versions that steam doesn't even distribute anymore for linux
