I feel like one part of my job as a technical lead is to dampen the highs and lows of software engineering. In other words, when people start to get stressed out (say, over architecture and design or interpersonal conflict) I try to help smooth that out, but ALSO when people get a bit too comfortable and confident I try to turn up the heat and challenge them and make things a little uncomfortable and show them where they still have room to invest and improve.
