This weekend I saw a reddish egret for the first time, and I cannot stop thinking about this bird.
so like, most of the herons and egrets you see in SoCal are very still when hunting. They want fish to come to them, and they strike very fast with their beak when food comes close. The snowy egret will do a little dancey dance, but it is a very small dancey dance.
The reddish egret gets out there. When it sees something it wants to eat it engages chase mode. It naruto runs, jumps in the air for fast cornering, and throws its wings up around its head when it reaches the fish it's following, to see better. At the same time, it slams its face into the water. If / when that doesn't work, the chase continues. These 4 photos are all from one single chase and he caught a fish that was maybe 2" long.
Out of all the birds... this is a bird. I have never laughed so hard while birdwatching.
