probably the simplest but most dramatic conceptual reframing tool i am trying to use more nowadays is whenever a company says "we can't find people to work" or similar, what they're actually saying is "we are underpaying for this position".

a wage is a bribe you pay a person to sit in one place and do a job, no matter how crappy that job is. if you are struggling to find a person to take that job you should raise the level of bribe. basic shit

They have figured this out. Compare the new hiring sign (taped in the window) to the old (little plastic sign), and apologies for the photo quality.

  • $5k-9k for childcare or tuition? it's now $28k (and looking at the website, it seems that you may get both childcare and tuition money if relevant, it's not completely clear)
  • free health insurance? they specify it's Platinum now
  • even the starting wage is somewhere between "above" (~$1/hr) and "significantly above" (~$5/hr) minimum wage depending on the Dick's location--which is why it's relevant to say the starting wage is $20/hr at all locations

EDIT: To be clear, this is a place where a burger is $2.30, a cheeseburger is $2.75, a shake is $3.60, and a coffee is $1.85. If they can figure it out, so can anyone.

meanwhile all the other food service businesses in the puget sound are saying they are having "staffing shortages" (or are closing stores to fight unions) despite only paying $15/hr
