Been missing Harebarined Schemes's Battletech (2018) so I finally got around to installing one of the popular mods for it. It's a real mixed bag in terms of playability, but one of the things that's great fun is that it allows you to field vehicles as well as mechs.

For the money and the tonnage, you truly cannot do better than the lil SRM Carrier. An incredible day-ruiner when the enemies have them, and now you can be that annoying as well.

It's never not funny to just roll up in this little fucking honda civic of a tank and absolutely destroy a heavy mech in one shot.

I've been playing Battletech Advanced 3062, which is a pretty ambitious expansion mechanically, but the added bits distinctly lack the charm of the original's writing, unsurprisingly.

The big differences are

  • Rebalancing that favors lighter mechs, so that you aren't forced to race to all-assault lances as soon as possible
  • You can use vehicles
  • You can drop up to like 8 mechs and 4 vehicles at a time, and enemy forces are also increased in number. This makes for slow encounters and extremely buggy spawns, but can also be kind of fun just in terms of the amount of sheer chaos
  • They added a bunch of mechs, both canon and original, and invented a whole new faction with their own set of tech, which is interesting
