Got a new DAP12. The battery in my old one died and I could not at present be arsed to figure out how to buy a new battery for it, take it apart, and replace it.

This is an objectively silly product to own in 202X because in most respects, a DAP is just a shitty phone with more buttons and jacks, but

  • I have a lot of FLACs3; too many to put all of them on my current phone while also having most episodes of Friends at the Table downloaded.
  • Streaming music services don't do the ONE THING I need in a music player, which is per-album shuffle, i.e., where it plays an album at random from beginning to end, then plays a different album at random from beginning to end.
    • I need this because I don't like listening to individual tracks, I like listening to albums
    • but I frequently don't have the executive function to pick an album to listen to
    • also my music collection is too random to make per-track shuffle a safe option
    • and letting algorithms pick a next track for me makes my brain itchy
  • You can plug wired headphones into a DAP, unlike most phones. Also you can plug more kinds of IEMs4 and headphones into it and get acceptable results. So when I'm forced to go outside, I'm more likely to actually listen to music and have a good time about it

Also it was a self-birthday-gift and it was on sale, which of course changes the entire moral landscape around a purchase lol

One thing that feels like a missed opportunity on DAPs is that pretty much none of them have built-in speakers. And I get it, insofar as phone speakers are never going to sound "audiophile", but...that's where all my music is, and sometimes I might want to play it for someone else? Seems like an obvious use case.

yeah that, and I listen to episodes of radio comedy to fall asleep to, and would prefer to use a single gadget that maybe isn't the best quality but isn't quite as tinny as a single phone speaker

I've used a bluetooth speaker that auto shuts down, but when it does, it gives that big boodoodoop noise and it wakes me up again.
