There are a lot of truly goofy isekai stories about people with apparently terrible skills that turn out to actually be OP. It's possibly the most overrepresented type of isekai? And some of them have incredibly random skills, like the one where the dude's power is eating nuts. (Failure Skill Nut Master) Or the other one where I think the dude has to eat rocks? Anyway.

But one of the most oddly endearing is this one about a guy who makes artifact-grade equipment that is incredibly powerful, but the equipment is cursed. But the curses are pretty mild and easily manageable. The real reason nobody wants to buy it is that it's all in the form of tacky goth tchotchkes, like, what if everything in a hot topic was secretly a tactical nuke.

He ends up being declared a wanted man, and people think it's because he's a criminal, but actually it's because the only person with equally bad taste is a princess and she put up a reward so she could get more cursed skull rings and shit.

I assume there are isekais where someone shows up in the fantasy world as Just A Normal Guy and has to start from scratch with no catch or twist or anything. Presumably that's what all other isekais are a twist on. Or perhaps not. Perhaps there is no Original Isekai and it's all one amorphous blob.

It's not that common, especially in what has become stereotypical isekai based on reincarnation into a new world. I think it's more normal for classic portal fantasies.

And like, one of the examples I can think of where it is just a normal dude who gets access to a dimensional portal, he also happens to have just won the lottery beforehand, enabling him to essentially like an NGO doing foreign aid / colonial trading company, which he wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

Also, there are vanishingly few cases where someone with a "failure" skill stays as "the weakest" for any appreciable length of time. One of the few cases that actually does this really well is The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash, which is about a girl eking out a living on the edges of society with no OP powers for at least about 3 volumes

wait the princess doing that is so cute i love it. and yeah ever since the proto bad skill isekais exploded “mapping” or even arifureta in a general sense it seems like there are SO many.
