Imani the piping plover!!! If you're not from Chicago or in any group chat with me, you may not know why he's such a big deal, but just know there's less than 200 Great Lakes piping plovers in the wild

He was hanging out super close to the fence that separates his protected area from the public beach and keeping the volunteer Plover Monitors busy trying to keep people 8ft away.

At one point one of the monitors asked a guy to step back when Imani started scurrying towards him

"Please, we're trying to give him lots of space, he's very endangered"

And the guy kind of gestures that the bird is the one closing the distance.

"Yeah, he doesn't know he's very endangered"

plover aaaa
also gosh I really respect the fact that there is meaningful effort to keep folks physically distanced from these: not only is it obvs keeping people from Doing Things to them, but hopefully it helps keep the birds from getting too comfortable being close to\approaching humans

yes! And in general people have been really good at not pushing or getting combative. Mostly people don't know there's a tiny super endangered fluffball running around, but once they do, they keep a respectful distance

Also when I got there, two of the three plover chicks (Sea Rocket, Wild Indigo and Prickly Pear, captive-raised from failed NY nests and released in Chicago last week) were asleep close to the fence and everyone was being very careful not to disturb them so they could nap :eggbug-sob:
