For the unfamiliar, the "Fletch" series is a popular and incredibly 70's-80's series of sort of tongue-in-cheek detective novels about a journalist who eventually just becomes like a put-upon rich weirdo who incidentally solves crimes, familiar to most people from the Chevy Chase movies.

They're pretty hit or miss, my favorites being the one where he's blackmailed by the CIA into surveilling like a weird journalism conference or something, and Confess, Fletch, in which Fletch as a suspected criminal is investigated by a weird, seemingly disinterested, enormous-bodied but tiny-headed Irish man who is basically a former spy, having in his childhood infiltrated the hitler youth on behalf of british intelligence, but currently in...exile? possibly? to Boston where he is made to work as a police officer, whomst the normal cops hate. It's a little bit like what if James Bond was forced to become Columbo, but, like Foyle, his main personality trait is that he refuses to drive his own car and makes a long-suffering companion chauffeur him around instead.

Flynn had a spin-off series, making Confess, Fletch sort of his backdoor pilot, in tv terms.

Anyway, Flynn is kind of important to the whole premise and vibe of Confess, Fletch, but apparently -- despite Flynn being incredibly obscure to anyone other than hardcore Gregory McDonald fans -- his movie rights were packaged and sold separately from Fletch's, and whoever has them apparently wanted enough money for them that they just wrote Flynn out of the movie. This is like Sony and Marvel having licensing pissing matches over crossover characters, except that there's like no chance of anybody ever making a Flynn movie.
