Stumbled on the adorable Sigma DP2 recently in my quest to find an adorable camera.

A 2008 camera with a 41mm equivalent f/2.8 fixed lens, 1.7x crop Foveon sensor, and pocket-able size; it's the definition of cute!

Especially since Foveon is more than a marketing buzzword. It's some neat sensor tech that does away with Bayer filters in favor of stacked image sensors that measure color by how far light travels through the silicon.

Now, the ugly, the high ISO performance is dreadful and necessitates 400 ISO or below. Preferably only shooting at 50 or 100. The battery only lasts for around 50 shots. The screen is no more than 240p. And the auto-focus misses.. a lot (see street photo above). Did I mention it's only 4.69 mpix?

But, when (if) you get the settings right, it can take some really pretty shots with impressive colors. The lens is quite sharp, and has reasonable depth of field. And even that aforementioned high ISO noise is strange and can be a bit of an aesthetic of it's own.

Going to take it out into the city tomorrow night! (With a tripod of course)

Sigma's Foveon cameras are one of the kinds of digital camera that I consistently have fun browsing through on flickr. The color rendition really is interesting and unique.

I also really admire that Sigma's weird enough to put out 20mm-equivalent and 75mm-equivalent fixed lens compacts.

The DP3 with its 75mm equivalent is really interesting, but was released later with the much higher quality Merrill sensor and is pretty expensive still.

Im really tempted by the DP2 Merrill. I learned photography with only a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 on a Sony A6000. And the DP2 Merrill would be quite similar. (Though, likely needing to be used much slower/patiently)
