hey uh I'm not sure if you've checked the #modular tag but it, uh. doesn't refer to modular synths. you might not want to use it to tag them. sorry. - guy with a modular kink

What are tags supposed to do? "Modular" should be able to be applied to anything that's modular, kinky or not. Tags become useless if there's some sort of unspoken rule about which subculture owns it, that no one else can know about. I don't like this!

Next you're going to tell me people are unhappy that my posts about my Personal Integrated Stereo System are tagged #piss

the other day i made a post about my nostalgia for the 90s Nickelodeon children's cartoon show Doug and saw the tag was already in use. So I checked it out and it was NSFW content about the characters.

and I had this moment reflecting on my times of disappointment in exploring the site, and realized I hardly ever find people who are interested in a thing here, only people who are horny for a thing. Kink is, generally, the default, and in my mind, Cohost is the Fetish Website.

I don't want to cast a value judgement here, people deserve spaces for their stuff. But getting into this site for the CSS crimes and shitposts, and then looking around the room as it turns more and more into an eyes wide shut sex party, I'm realizing maybe this isn't my ideal spot for a casual hangout

to be fair, they weren't saying not to use the tag, more giving a warning that the tag is being mainly used for that kink. that kinda makes sense to me- posting with a tag that is also used for kink might not be ideal if you wanna make your post more discoverable for people that are interested in your specific thing and not interested in browsing, for example, both modular synths and modular kinks simultaneously. maybe i'm misreading it tho

tbh I’m really not bothered in the slightest by it. I never really felt like I was being pushed to untag or whatever, more that this was a little “hey just so yknow” signal. This isn’t a turf war!

On the one hand this is what the 18+ adult content filter is for, but on the other hand, common word tags being used exclusively by one subculture seems kinda sus. (Not to mention how often people forget to add the adult content warning to their posts, or are laxer on their definition of it.)

i guess my feeling is just that using a relatively common adjective as the tag for capturing the entirety of a subculture, regardless of which it is, is a bit odd?

like, as someone who is not involved in either of the two things being talked about here i can't personally imagine ever searching for a term as generic as 'modular' because if i did (before today) what would i have thought would come up? maybe people who really like modifiable storage solutions, idk

by comparison, if i were gonna look up 'piss' i am 10000000% certain exactly what i would find and would have zero ground to be surprised
